Hurricane Norbert

LA PAZ, Mexico — Fishermen pulled in their boats and hotels warned tourists away from beaches Friday as Category 2 Hurricane Norbert bore down on Mexico's southern Baja California peninsula.

Norbert, with winds of near 105 mph, was expected to hit land early Saturday along a relatively unpopulated stretch north of the resort of Cabo San Lucas.

Paula Lucero Aviles set out with six children and four other adults in a small fishing boat Friday when they got a cellphone call warning them to return to the port of San Carlos, where the skies had already turned dark with the hurricane's approach.

"We turned back because they warned us bad weather was coming," Aviles said. "We would have been risking our lives. It is coming on strong."

A hurricane warning was issued for the west coast of Baja California from Puerto San Andresito to Agua Blanca. Forecasters said Norbert would weaken somewhat before hitting land.

But the government issued hurricane warnings along the coast of the northwestern border state of Sonora and on the east coast of the Baja peninsula from near La Paz north to Loreto.

Norbert is expected to sweep across Baja on Saturday, cross the Gulf of California and then head toward the Mexican mainland.

The storm's remnants were expected to dump more rain on water-logged West Texas, where authorities were preparing for more flooding.

State and local officials plan to activate an emergency operations center Monday in Presidio, where an earthen levee is struggling to hold back the swollen Rio Grande.

The Governor of Baja California Sur state, Narciso Agundez, said officials here are "very worried."

"It is certain that it will hit land tomorrow in Baja California Sur," one of two states that make up the peninsula, Agundez said.

Under overcast skies, fishermen hauled their boats onto beaches in La Paz, a port town on the peninsula's eastern coast. Yellow flags on beaches warned people to stay out of the water.

Eli and Claudia Tubia, on vacation from Texarkana, Texas, took a cruise Wednesday night despite the coming storm, but their hotel in resort-dotted Cabo San Lucas was already storing outdoor furniture and paintings.

"They kind of cleared out the beach, and the restaurants that they have on the beach, they took all the furnishings away," Eli Tubia said.

Norbert was centered 210 miles west of Baja's southern tip late Friday and was moving north at 12 mph, said the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Meanwhile in southern Mexico, Tropical Storm Odile was approaching the resort of Acapulco, but was expected to remain offshore.

The government extended a tropical storm warning from Lagunas de Chacahua westward past Acapulco and Zihuatanejo to Punta San Telmo, as Odile moved parallel to the Pacific coast with winds of about 60 mph.

Odile was located about 40 miles southeast of Acapulco, and was moving northwest at about 13 mph. Odile could become a hurricane, and a small deviation in its path could bring the storm inland, the hurricane center said.

Forecasters said Odile would sweep close to land on Saturday and could dump as much as 8 inches of rain, threatening dangerous mudslides.

Odile has already caused flooding in Acapulco and forced officials to cancel classes at local schools.

Civil defense officials in the southern state of Guerrero, where Acapulco is located, urged about 10,000 people living along river banks or other dangerous areas to evacuate.

But Adrian Jaimes Celso, who lives in a vulnerable mountainside settlement in Acapulco, said residents "don't know where any shelters are if we have to evacuate, or what provisions have been made."

I love my city. It sounds so cliche, but we in Houston really walk the walk when it comes to "neighbor helping neighbor." We did it when we hosted our Louisiana neighbors in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. And we are doing it again during the aftermath of Hurricane Ike -- but this time it is our actual neighbors, house-next-to-house, who we are helping.

I've seen some pretty devastated areas in the past 24 hours since my childhood home is in Clear Lake about five-ten minutes from Galveston Bay. My family was lucky. We are doing fine physically and our homes are generally okay. My parents' house only had minor flooding, a broken window and broken branches that fell away from the house. I, too, was lucky, having no damage to my apartment in town. There are many, however, who have suffered greatly. It is exactly at this time, when people need it, that I've seen our Houstonians rise to the occasion. I've met many people helping those in need by removing debris, sharing food and water and just providing an ear when needed. I'll try to share some of those stories over the next week.

We are proud of a lot here in Houston. We are proud of being the home of NASA. We are proud of our park space. We are proud of our move towards being a more environmentally-friendly city. We are proud of our low cost of living. We are proud of our hardworking sports teams. We are proud of our diversity. We are proud of our world class arts community and museum system. We are proud of our medical center, arguably the most reputable in the world. We are proud of so much here. But, when all is said and done, I think we are proudest of our neighbors -- folks who for the most part are driven by big hearts and selfless motivations.

Hurricane Gustav - Baton Rouge, Louisiana 09.03.2008

Mandy Jumonville and her husband lost their mobile home to a tornado spawned by Hurricane Gustav. They just bought a small home and were remodeling it but were still living in the mobile home when Gustav struck. Luckily they decided to stay with parents during the storm. Unfortunately the tornado also hit their other home – they lost both homes to the same tornado.

Why is Louisiana and the Gulf Coast already 3rd page news???

The national news coverage is acting like Hurricane Gustav was not devastating because New Orleans didn't flood like it did after Hurricane Katrina. We the people of Louisiana are glad that it did not happen again but at the same time...we are sitting in the heat with no power, no phone lines, some have no houses left, others have gas leaks, some have suffered a death in the family.

This storm WAS a big deal! And for the people of Louisiana it STILL is a BIG DEAL!
Don't forget about us....just because New Orleans wasn't flooded doesn't mean the REST of the state was affected!

Look at the size of this tree??!!??!

I am amazed at how many trees JUST missed a house, car, or people. This is a picture of one tree that fell the right direction (away from the house!)

Thats me next to it....and I am 5'9"!

Another tree that fell and barely clipped a house....

La. declared major disaster area

Gov. Bobby Jindal said Tuesday that President Bush signed an order declaring Louisiana a major disaster area.

Also, state officials announced that 10 people died in Louisiana as a result of the Hurricane Gustav.

The president’s order paves the way for federal aid on temporary housing, home repairs and low-cost loans for residents of East Baton Rouge, Ascension, Livingston and other parishes.

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.

“We are hoping to use this visit to help break through some of the challenges that remain in front of us,” Jindal said.

Health and Hospitals Secretary Alan Levine said Tuesday that 10 people died as a result of Gustav.

The storm is blamed for the deaths of seven people who died of natural causes.

“Hurricanes can cause great stress,” Levine said.

Two people died in Baton Rouge. The others died in Jefferson, Calcasieu, Lafayette and Lafourche parishes.

The storm was much more devastating in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, where 96 people died.

“I would certainly expect that the number would be lower because so many people evacuated,” Levine said, referring to the nearly 2 million people who left coastal Louisiana before the storm hit.

Hurricane Gustav made landfall midmorning Monday in lower Terrebonne Parish as a Category 2 storm. Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes sustained the biggest impact but Baton Rouge experienced strong gusts.

An Abbeville couple died at a home in Pollard Estates on Monday after a tree smashed through the roof. Richard Broussard, 72, and his 71-year-old wife, Mary Ann, evacuated to Baton Rouge from the storm.

The other deaths:

* Three resulting from natural causes during evacuation in Jefferson Parish.

* Three resulting from natural causes during evacuation in Calcasieu Parish.

* One accidental in Lafayette Parish attributed to falling trees.

* One in Lafourche Parish associated with natural causes.

The death toll from Gustav is expected to be much smaller than the 1,400 people killed during Hurricane Katrina. Katrina hit New Orleans hard, flooding most of the heavily populated city. Gustav largely spared New Orleans.

A Jefferson woman died on Interstate 10 near Prairieville Monday after her car hit a tree. However, State Police said her death may have been alcohol-related.

Louisiana: Officials- Evacuees Should Not Return Before Roads Open, Power, Water, and Emergency Services Restored
September 2, 2008 - 9:42 pm

Baton Rouge (September 2, 2008) - The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is working with its federal, state and local partners to remind those that fled Hurricane Gustav to remain in place until state and local officials announce it is safe to return.

“Don’t go home when there’s no power, there’s no water, the roads are blocked, and trees are down,” said FEMA Administrator David Paulison.

Evacuees attempting to return home early face road blocks, traffic delays, limited water and food, limited utilities, no hospitals and limited if any health care facilities, and serious health hazards. Those crowding the roads seeking to return home are limiting the mobility of emergency responders, utility workers and other essential personnel who must travel to their area and complete their work before it is safe for the general public to return.

Instead, evacuees should remain where they are – with friends and family, at a hotel, or at a shelter. Shelters provide safe havens for evacuees with food and medical care while officials in southern Louisiana work to prepare for their return.

I HAVE INTERNET!!!

I am online at my sisters work on the other side of Baton Rouge. The area where I live was hit more than this part of town! They have power!!! We may not get power for 4 - 6 weeks!!! Which is insane....but I know that Gov. Jindal is getting his people to work hard and they have cleared lots of tress out of roads and are working to get power restored. Almost every 10 feet down one of our main roads there is a huge tree that they have cut to made the road passable! Below are some pictures...more to come!

again I am on my brothers iPhone...we have no power as the majority of baton rouge is out of power! We managed to get our generator running and joined the rest of the street in adding to the smell of gasoline in the air. My posts are short because of the circumstances. This is the worst storm baton rouge has ever seen! Lots of pics to come... As soon as I can find Internet!

worse than andrew!

Gustav has taken our power lines down. I am writing from my brothers iPhone. All of east baton rouge and many surrounding parishes are without power. Every where I look I see trees down and power lines down! I will post pics of damage asap! Please leave comments as to your storm damage and any other related news.

My hunt for gas...

I drove around Baton Rouge today to try and get gas....that was a task! Stations were closed because that had no more gas. I managed to pull over and get some shots and also in some areas I saw boards on houses, people mowing, and the flag waving!

The Calm before the Storm...

I don't know what these wildflowers are, but, when they start blooming in the backyard, it's a sure sign that Summer is winding down and Fall is not far away...they also signal the peak of the hurricane season in Louisiana and the Gulf States.

Gustov is not supposed to impact us until Monday, more than likely, I'll be out of touch for a while next week...{=P I'll spend the day tomorrow trying to secure the yard and house (a near impossible task), and buying plenty of gas for the generator. More than likely, it will just be a LOT of rain and some gusty winds. We're pretty far from the coast, where the brunt of the storm will be felt. I'm not really a religious person, but I pray that New Orleans is spared any further grief.

I hope that you all will understand that, after Katrina, we're a bit nervous down here...

Nothing left to do but Sit and Wait...

I'm not looking for sympathy...just letting ya'll know what's happening down here. It's looking really bad, with Gustav at Cat 4 and heading more or less straight for my house. They're predicting landfall very close to New Orleans. I just can't believe that this is happening again so soon.

We have done everything that we can to prepare...all that's left is to wait for it. I have no doubt that we will be without power for the better part of a week, but at least we have a generator and plenty of propane to cook with. I've been wanting to clear out the freezer anyway...{=/

Well, OK...a tiny little bit of sympathy would be alright I guess...*+^
