Mandy Jumonville and her husband lost their mobile home to a tornado spawned by Hurricane Gustav. They just bought a small home and were remodeling it but were still living in the mobile home when Gustav struck. Luckily they decided to stay with parents during the storm. Unfortunately the tornado also hit their other home – they lost both homes to the same tornado.

Why is Louisiana and the Gulf Coast already 3rd page news???

The national news coverage is acting like Hurricane Gustav was not devastating because New Orleans didn't flood like it did after Hurricane Katrina. We the people of Louisiana are glad that it did not happen again but at the same time...we are sitting in the heat with no power, no phone lines, some have no houses left, others have gas leaks, some have suffered a death in the family.

This storm WAS a big deal! And for the people of Louisiana it STILL is a BIG DEAL!
Don't forget about us....just because New Orleans wasn't flooded doesn't mean the REST of the state was affected!

Gov. Bobby Jindal said Tuesday that President Bush signed an order declaring Louisiana a major disaster area.

Also, state officials announced that 10 people died in Louisiana as a result of the Hurricane Gustav.

The president’s order paves the way for federal aid on temporary housing, home repairs and low-cost loans for residents of East Baton Rouge, Ascension, Livingston and other parishes.

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.

“We are hoping to use this visit to help break through some of the challenges that remain in front of us,” Jindal said.

Health and Hospitals Secretary Alan Levine said Tuesday that 10 people died as a result of Gustav.

The storm is blamed for the deaths of seven people who died of natural causes.

“Hurricanes can cause great stress,” Levine said.

Two people died in Baton Rouge. The others died in Jefferson, Calcasieu, Lafayette and Lafourche parishes.

The storm was much more devastating in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, where 96 people died.

“I would certainly expect that the number would be lower because so many people evacuated,” Levine said, referring to the nearly 2 million people who left coastal Louisiana before the storm hit.

Hurricane Gustav made landfall midmorning Monday in lower Terrebonne Parish as a Category 2 storm. Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes sustained the biggest impact but Baton Rouge experienced strong gusts.

An Abbeville couple died at a home in Pollard Estates on Monday after a tree smashed through the roof. Richard Broussard, 72, and his 71-year-old wife, Mary Ann, evacuated to Baton Rouge from the storm.

The other deaths:

* Three resulting from natural causes during evacuation in Jefferson Parish.

* Three resulting from natural causes during evacuation in Calcasieu Parish.

* One accidental in Lafayette Parish attributed to falling trees.

* One in Lafourche Parish associated with natural causes.

The death toll from Gustav is expected to be much smaller than the 1,400 people killed during Hurricane Katrina. Katrina hit New Orleans hard, flooding most of the heavily populated city. Gustav largely spared New Orleans.

A Jefferson woman died on Interstate 10 near Prairieville Monday after her car hit a tree. However, State Police said her death may have been alcohol-related.

Louisiana: Officials- Evacuees Should Not Return Before Roads Open, Power, Water, and Emergency Services Restored

Baton Rouge (September 2, 2008) - The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is working with its federal, state and local partners to remind those that fled Hurricane Gustav to remain in place until state and local officials announce it is safe to return.

“Don’t go home when there’s no power, there’s no water, the roads are blocked, and trees are down,” said FEMA Administrator David Paulison.

Evacuees attempting to return home early face road blocks, traffic delays, limited water and food, limited utilities, no hospitals and limited if any health care facilities, and serious health hazards. Those crowding the roads seeking to return home are limiting the mobility of emergency responders, utility workers and other essential personnel who must travel to their area and complete their work before it is safe for the general public to return.

Instead, evacuees should remain where they are – with friends and family, at a hotel, or at a shelter. Shelters provide safe havens for evacuees with food and medical care while officials in southern Louisiana work to prepare for their return.

I HAVE INTERNET!!!

I am online at my sisters work on the other side of Baton Rouge. The area where I live was hit more than this part of town! They have power!!! We may not get power for 4 - 6 weeks!!! Which is insane....but I know that Gov. Jindal is getting his people to work hard and they have cleared lots of tress out of roads and are working to get power restored. Almost every 10 feet down one of our main roads there is a huge tree that they have cut to made the road passable! Below are some pictures...more to come!

the day after...

again I am on my brothers iPhone...we have no power as the majority of baton rouge is out of power! We managed to get our generator running and joined the rest of the street in adding to the smell of gasoline in the air. My posts are short because of the circumstances. This is the worst storm baton rouge has ever seen! Lots of pics to come... As soon as I can find Internet!

Gustav has taken our power lines down. I am writing from my brothers iPhone. All of east baton rouge and many surrounding parishes are without power. Every where I look I see trees down and power lines down! I will post pics of damage asap! Please leave comments as to your storm damage and any other related news.

My hunt for gas...

I drove around Baton Rouge today to try and get gas....that was a task! Stations were closed because that had no more gas. I managed to pull over and get some shots and also in some areas I saw boards on houses, people mowing, and the flag waving!

Update:

Grand Isle has just lost power.
It is located about 100 miles south of New Orleans.
It is dark there and there is no flooding....yet.
There has been heavy rain there since 9p.m.
The road that leads to the mainland is under water.

It is currently a CAT 3 storm!
